Cut Flowers Care

It feels great when we receive flowers, be it for birthdays, anniversaries, engagements - the list goes on, but from the flowers point of view, it is a time of great uncertainty. Will they be treated well ? Will they be neglected and untended ? Please read the following care tips which should tell you everything you need to know about keeping your flowers happy and healthy for the maximum amount of time.

At Designs by Taran, all our fresh flowers and foliages arrive within 24 hours of being picked. As soon they arrive on our doorstep, every possible step is taken to ensure that they are treated with passion and tender loving care.

We hope they get continual VIP treatment in your care too. Please follow these simple care instructions and we promise you that they will last well above expectations.

1. Prepare flower food according to packet instructions in a suitably clean and watertight container.

2. Remove all packaging from the flowers and cut the stem ends (min. 1") at a 45-degree angle and immediately place them in the prepared container.

   Just in case you got interrupted and were delayed between the cutting of the stems and placing them in water, we would always recommend that you repeat this step again, simply because the cells at the end of the stems will start forming a barrier to protect fluid loss. This barrier then stops the stem taking up any water, which then causes premature drooping and a lifeless looking stem of foliage or flower.

3. Display the flowers in a cool and bright room. Avoid placing in direct sun, near any source of heat and away from draughts. Always place the container on a coaster to prevent any damage to the surface.

4. Please check water levels daily.

5. On day 3 or 4, please refresh the water by following Step 1 using the second flower food sachet provided and re-trim the stem ends too. "Deadhead" the design (remove any dead / brown flowers) as this encourages new buds to bloom.

6. Misting the flower design is also recommended. Please do this over the sink at night and place them on the coaster the following morning.

Flower designs with Lilies.

Lily pollen is very stunning but on the stamens ONLY!! To prevent any unnecessary staining we would advise you to remove them as they develop. If you have any accidents, the best way to remove them is by placing sticky tape over the stain and peeling it off. Use a clean strip of tape every time.

Flower designs with Roses.

Roses are the world's favourite flowers. But they are very sensitive and require special love...

We would advise you to observe the fresh roses within a day or two of receiving them. You can tell if something is not right with their appearance. This could be due to the classic "drooped at the neck" look. This happens when there is air bubble trapped in the stem. To help that poor rose recover, we recommend the following steps.

1. Pull the stem out very carefully and wrap the flower head with newspaper.

2. Pour boiling water in a cup about 2" deep and place the re cut stem in the cup for 5 to 10 seconds.

3. Remove the protective newspaper from the rose head and re-cut the stem again, for the last time and place it back in the flower design. Hopefully, this procedure has popped the trapped air bubble and now the rose is taking up water to its full potential.

4. Within couple of minutes the rose should be looking healthy again.

Floral Arrangement

Receiving floral designs in oasis is by far the best option of all. They require the least care... Please follow these simple steps to ensure longer container life.

1. Remove from packaging and place on a waterproof dish over the sink.

2. Mix flower food according to instructions printed on the sachet and top up the arrangement slowly (to allow the oasis to soak up the water). Leave to rest for 30 minutes.

   Tip out extra water and wipe dry the container.

3. Place the arrangement on waterproof coaster or dish to further protect your surface.

4. Top up water accordingly.

5. On day 3 or 4, please repeat step 2, 3 and 4 using the second flower food sachet provided. Remove any dead flower heads to encourage new ones to bloom.

6. Regular misting is recommended in very dry homes. Please do this over the sink at night and place it back the next morning.
