Designs by Taran is the life-long dream of Taran Vernon, a talented and
imaginative floral designer based in Farnham, Surrey, UK.
Taran was born and bred in sunny and humid Malaysia, where what are often
seen as expensive tropical flowers here, grow there as roadside bushes!
After finishing her A-levels, she had to get a job to help her family
financially and so she joined a 5 star hotel in heart of Kuala Lumpur,
the Malaysian capital.
She started from the bottom as a telephonist and made her way up as a Guest
Relations Officer, learning extensive hospitality and customer service
skills along the way. Four years later she took to the skies and joined
British Airways as one of their International Cabin Crew based in Kuala
Lumpur. She enjoyed her job very much, it felt almost like a hobby - doing
what she knew best - providing excellent customer service. But all good
things in life must come to an end.... so she resigned and joined her
husband in the UK.
Here is what Taran has to say about her passion for flowers…
"My passion for flowers was passed down to me by my mother, who loves
gardening, especially flowering plants. She was also an excellent
embroiderer and taught my sister and myself the basic embroidery skills.
As a teenager I used to earn pocket money by making various types of
ribbon flowers. My customers were usually my teachers, neighbours and
classmate's relatives. It was very rewarding and I was given confidence
by all the compliments and tips I received at this time."
When Taran moved to the UK, she couldn't resist the tempation to join the
hospitality industry again and joined a hotel in London. But just 9 months
later she had her first baby girl and decideded not to work so far away
from her in the future.
Taran then enrolled at Merrist Wood College in 2002 ( to study for a
National Certificate in Floristry level 2) and she passed with flying
colours. Just before her graduation, she gave birth to her second baby
girl, who attended at the tender age of 2 weeks old. After a good rest
she continued her studies at Merrist Wood College in 2004 as a part time
student (now studying for the Advance National Certificate in Floristry
Level 3). It was tough, playing mum, wife and student during these 2 years,
but after a great deal of hard work, dedication and commitment, she was
delighted to pass, again with distinction.
Between 2005 and the present time, she has worked with various talented
florists and gained a wealth of valuable knowledge of the industry.
Here's what Taran says about what inspires her…
"To inspire my creativity, I often look at the latest trends in Lifestyle
fashion as well as at the catwalk ramp and the seasonal availability of
fresh materials. To keep up with the latest technology and trends in
floristry, I often attend trade shows, demonstrations, seminars and
workshops by master florists from around the world.
Floristry has come a long way away from just being 'sticking a few stems
in a vase', It has become an art and fashion accessory. The art of
floristry has no limit, just be imaginative, creative and above all
BE PASSIONATE !"
Taran is a very passionate and focused creative force. Her life-long
passion for flowers is the main inspiration behind her business, but
she also cares deeply about the environment, and is committed to doing
all she can to protect it, both in business and in life generally.
She is also actively involved with several charity organisations, and feels
a heartfelt need to help those in life less fortunate. She plans to expand
her philanthropic projects as she grows her business, and feels very much
that the two go hand in hand.
She has great experience, and takes enormous pride in her design work. She
goes to exhaustive lengths researching the latest trends in decorative
floristry, before developing her own powerfully imaginative designs based
on this. She has a thorough and intrinsic understanding of contemporary
& traditional floral art.
Taran likes to work with similarly driven and artistic people, and is
pleased to bring the work of like-minded artists to the market via her
online shop. She works with personally selected local chocolatiers,
jewelers, potters, painters and other handcraft artists to produce a
range of exquisite gifts that compliment her floral creations.
